Pencilvania

The beloved town of Pencilvania has been a staple of the cartoon world for decades. Its Characters and destinations have brought joy, laughter, and whimsy to all of its loyal Audience. There are times where a certain Penny Graphodil, the Mayor of the town, still remembers when the Island first had its original shape. Though she can't quite recall why it was ever changed… Maybe it was just too boring. I mean, think about it! Just a single line you'd need to walk through and you'd be right at the end of the town! Where were the thrills, the spills, the mystery, the excitement? At least now, Pencilvania has those in heaping handfuls… and Penny wouldn't have it any other way.

The Town Hall

A rickety series of metal stilts holds this massive, perfectly symmetrical cube off of the surface of Pencilvania's sandy ground. In truth, the stilts have been built there to prevent the rush of perpetual floods into this austere building's singular carved entrance, which is accessible via a series of sturdy stone steps leading up to its continuously open threshold. Some would say such an intimidating facade was bad civic design1). Often, visitors will be driven to Pencil-Mania, the more visually appealing pencil-shaped museum just off to the side of the Town Hall. But those who are more astute might acknowledge that the Town Hall is where the real work begins, and where it will eventually end.

What resides within the Town Hall is a room. Just a singular room, with the things that every room most certainly needs: a sprawling bookcase, a succession of beanbag chairs, a gigantic quilt, and a small table with a lamp. None of these things really have or need a proper place2); the visitors who come and go will often rearrange them based on their desires. Regardless of its position, the lamp will cast a soft yellow glow throughout the entire expanse, illuminating every corner of this room. But it doesn't have to be yellow all the time, you know. The light's colour may shift to whatever the visitor will like.

Of course, any room would be sorely lacking without an elephant to go with it. Truly, it's alright if you haven't happened to notice her yet. Perhaps you don't need to. Within the sanctity of this room, Penny Graphodil, the esteemed mayor of Pencilvania, hears all, regardless of anyone's ability to see her. The multitudes of books stacked upon her shelf serve as her personal library, though visitors are free to peruse through it if they would like. After all, Penny remembers the contents of every single one, and can recite them from memory. An elephant never forgets, especially when it comes to a new face.

Despite its initially imposing stature, Penny has publicly declared (from the safety of the room, of course) that anyone is welcome within the Town Hall at any time, whether to ask questions about Pencilvania's extensive history, to request certain changes or additions to the town itself, or even just to relax and chat over a nice mug of hot chocolate (which is complementary as you enter the threshold – don't worry, it'll just appear right in your hand).

If there's one thing it might be best to not ask Penny about, it's a pretzel. The bizarre shape of such a salty snack truly eludes her understanding, and she certainly doesn't know why the island is now currently in that shape. At least we can now admit that there are at least two elephants in the room.

The Frowntain

Right in the middle of Pencilvania is what should be its most beautiful spot. The sun shining down on the cartoon cobblestones, the surrounding buildings made cheery by their energetic inhabitants… but the Frowntain sticks out of this like a sore thumb.

A monochromatic frowny fountain sits in this colourful land. Maybe the saddest fountain you've ever seen. It's so sad it doesn't even know when to turn off, and there have been reports (usually directed to the exasperated mayor) of occasional leakage into homes as a result of this. While it is still one of the most beautiful places on the Island, it would be so much prettier if it didn't rain on everyone's parade…
