Character Creation

In That's All Folks!, you play as a cartoon character in the final season of an animated show. Characters can be anthropomorphic, humans, animals, things which are traditionally inanimate objects, gribblies under the bed, an animated child dreaming of high-stakes espionage, and more! We encourage you to think about what you might find fun, and we'll do what we can to help enable you. To learn more about cartoon characters in this world, check out the Cartoon Characters page.

This is a game about celebrating life and the meaning you find in it, no matter how serious or ridiculous that meaning may be. Character creation is structured to help you reflect on the kind of individual your character is, their highs and lows, and what makes them them.

Before you can submit a character, you will need to fill in the sign-up form. This does not require you to have a character ready, but is needed if you want to enter the ballot. You need to do this before 23:59 on Thursday 11th of July. If you are only intending to Crew, you should still fill this in.

To submit a character, use the character creation form.

To get more ideas, check out the Sample Characters, look at the recommendations of how to realise your character concept, join the optional character creation session or email the GMs here.

The character creation form is used both to join the crew or start off as a player. You will get a very different view if you opt only to crew in the first section of the form.

The form will send your responses to whichever email address you gave it in the first section. If you do not see a copy of your responses in your emails, please check your spam folder.

The deadline to submit the character creation form, either as a player or crew, is 23:59 on Friday 12th of July. The deadline for the sign-up form is 23:59 on Thursday 11th of July. If we have over 30 player sign-ups, there will be a ballot to randomly select people who have opted into the ballot. Crew will not be entered into the ballot.

For more information, see Player Cap & Balloting.

If you want to join the game starting as a player, this is what you can expect on the form:

  1. OC information – Your OC name, pronouns, email, whether you'd like to join the ballot (more information below), and whether you would like to join the Crew for the game. If you say “no” to joining the Crew, you'll get the next few character-related sections
  2. Character Details – Who your character is, what they look like, their motivations, key highs and lows in your character's life up until now, and what an ending means for them
  3. Character Abilities – Which Abilities and corresponding positive (+) and negative (-) Effects your character has. You must take 3 positive and 2 negative Ability Effects. See Abilities or the Abilities section below for more information
  4. Character Mechanics – Which Mechanics your character has. See Mechanics and Curtain Calls for more information
    1. You may take up to 2 Cartoon Logics, adding up to a total of 0
    2. You may take up to 3 Writing Conventions, adding up to a total of 0
    3. Some Mechanics describe a connection with another character. You can discuss this with other players at or outside the optional character creation session, offline, or you can ask the GMs to help connect with other players or NPCs.
    4. You may take as many Playstyle Quirks as you like, as long as you don't pick two which are mutually exclusive (e.g. “Child” and “Teen” – you can't be both at the same time!)
    5. This is also the section where you specify roughly how many sessions you want before your character's Curtain Call
  5. Anything Else? – A miscellaneous section where you can add any extra details not already covered on the form
  1. OC information – Your OC name, pronouns, email, whether you'd like to join the ballot (more information below), and whether you would like to join the crew for the game. If you say “yes” to joining the crew, you'll get the crew-relevant section
  2. So You Want to Crew… – You can specify session availability, and the kinds of NPCs you might particularly enjoy or hate to play
  3. Anything Else? – A miscellaneous section where you can add any extra details not already covered on the form

This will be covered in more detail on Abilities. However, this is a quick reference guide.

Abilities define whether your character is particularly good or atrociously bad at something. The list of Abilities is Beef, Gumption, STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Maths), Sneakiness, Gorm, Wits, and Prestige.

  • Select 3 positive and 2 negative Effects (unless you take the Two Dimensional Cartoon Logic) from any combination of Abilities
  • The positive Effects can all be part of the same Ability (e.g. all Beef), or can be spread across multiple Abilities (e.g. could have one positive Effect in Beef, Sneakiness, and STEAM). Negative Effects may also be from either the same or a different Ability
  • You can have both positive and negative Effects which are from the same Ability
  • If you have an idea for a different Effect, you can suggest it. The GMs will review your suggestion(s) and let you know if they're good to go, need changes, or might not be viable

If you do not take the Two Dimensional Cartoon Logic:

  • You must select 1 positive Zip Effect

If you do take the Two Dimensional Cartoon Logic:

  • You can take only 2 positive Effects
  • You can choose whether or not make one of these a positive Zip Effect. Bear in mind that if you don't take a Zip Effect then you will not have any way of spending your Zip!

There is an optional character creation session starting at 19:00 on Thursday 11th of July in the Character Creation Discord. You can still submit a character if you can't attend this session. You can also go to this session even if you already have submitted a character.

This is a good session to do such things as:

  • Ask GMs questions about the world, mechanics, or any other niggling questions you might have about the game
  • Discuss with other players possible connections your characters could have

While this is a great place to form IC connections, you can discuss possible connections outside of the character creation session. If you haven't made any connections but would like to, email the GMs at gm@taf.oxfordrpg.com to mention you want connections, and ideally what kind of connections you want. We will connect you with other PCs similarly looking for connections, or NPCs. You can also ask people for connections at any time in the #character-links channel on the Character Creation Discord.

You can join the server regardless of whether you can join the character creation session. There will be a questions channel you can access.

That's All Folks! has a 30 player limit. In the event that the game gets too many sign-ups, places will be allocated by ballot. This will be done at random from those who wish to enter the ballot. Please be aware that students are not prioritised and have an equal chance of getting a spot as non-student members of OURPGSoc or OLS.

If you only want to be a member of the game's Crew, you will be given a place as crew. People who only want to Crew do not count towards the ballot.

If we exceed our 30 player limit and need to run a ballot, we will let you know whether or not you have successfully secured a spot by Friday the 12th of July via the email you provided. If you do not see an email by this time, please check your spam folder.
